What is a Medicare Type Code?
A Medicare Type Code is a designation required when Medicare is the patient’s secondary insurance policy. This code indicates why Medicare is secondary to another payer.Why is a Medicare Type Code important?
When submitting claims where Medicare is the secondary payer, the Medicare Type Code must be included for proper claim processing. Without this code, claims may be rejected or denied.Workflow Instructions
Adding a Medicare Type Code
For Elation EHR + Billing practices, while baseline insurance information is entered via the EHR, the Medicare Type Code currently needs to be entered via Elation Billing.
- Edit the Policy - On the Medicare Policy, click the yellow Pencil (edit) button.
- Access Additional Options - Select See More to expand the additional fields.
- Select Medicare Secondary Code - Select the appropriate Medicare Secondary Code from the drop-down menu.
- Save - Click Save to apply the changes.
