Each month, Elation will compile the most frequently asked questions from Elation customers through our different customer interactions and Office Hours and share the questions and answers with our customers. We hope to broaden our customers’ knowledge of our amazing features and share best practice workflows.
The questions from April 2024 can be divided into the following categories:
Charting
Can I export content from an existing visit note to new visit note?
Yes, you can export all notes from an existing visit note to a new visit note by following the instructions below. Please note that vitals and orders will not be copied over as this data changes on a visit by visit basis.
- Find the existing visit note in the patient’s chart
- Click “Actions” and then click “Export to New Note”
What dictation softwares are compatible with Elation?
There are currently a few dictation software options that are able to be used alongside Elation when documenting information in the patient chart. Many of our practices have been known to utilize Dragon, M Modal, or Speech Notes. Please note that Apple Dictation is not HIPAA compliant and Dragon is not available for Apple devices.
How do I keep track draft orders and draft notes?
Draft orders and draft notes will appear in the ‘Draft Notes’, ‘Draft Letters’ or ‘Draft Orders’ inbox in the Practice Home Requiring Action Queue for the assigned user.

Patient Communication
Can I send custom visit instructions to my patients?
You can send custom visit instructions to patients who have an appointment with you on an appointment by appointment basis. To send send custom visit instructions:
- Locate the patient appointment in which you want to send visit instructions for in the Calendar.
- Click “Edit” in the appointment overlay.
- Add your custom visit instructions in the Visit instructions for patients field.
- Click “Save” to save your changes.
- Click the “Send” button next to the visit instructions in the appointment overlay.
If the mode of the appointment is ‘Virtual’ you can add your visit instructions in the
Virtual visit instructions for patients
field. If the visit instructions will be the same for every virtual appointment you can add these default instructions to “Settings” -> “Virtual Visits” -> “Virtual visit instructions” for each Provider Level User that is using the Zoom integration with Elation.
How do I use Elation to generate a medical excuse letter for the patient for school or work?
You can use the “Letter to Provider” feature in Elation to generate a medical excuse letter for the patient for school or work. Here is how we recommend composing the letter:
- Open the patient’s chart.
- Click the “Letter” option at the top of the chart.
- Click “To Provider”.
- In the To field enter the name of the recipient if you have them saved in your contact list or simply enter “To Whom It May Concern” or anything else in free text if preferred.
- Fill in the Subject and Body as you would for an excuse letter
- You can optionally save the subject and body content as a template for future use with any patient by clicking “Save as Template”.
- You can select from your saved Letter Templates by clicking “Templates”
- Click “Sign & Send” if you select a contact with an email or fax number on file OR click “Sign & Print w/Attachments” if you simply want to print the letter for the patient to take home with them.
