Printing Prescriptions
The Electronic Signatures of Elation users located in Ohio will not be printed when prescription orders are printed out. Ohio requires “wet ink” (manual) signatures on paper prescriptions.ePrescriptions
Electronic Prescriptions are legal and accepted in Ohio. Electronic Prescriptions written by Ohio Elation providers will be received by pharmacies without a manual signature displayed, which still satisfies Ohio’s prescribing requirements. In an effort to reduce accidental and potentially harmful prescriptions, Ohio requires positive identification. Paragraph (N) of rule 4729-5-01 (viewhere) states positive identification is “a method of identifying an individual who prescribes, administers, or dispenses a dangerous drug.” All providers in Ohio must keep “a printout of every transaction that is verified and manually signed within a reasonable period of time by the individual who prescribed, administered, or dispensed the dangerous drug”. Elation helps providers follow this requirement by providing an Rx Report feature that documents all prescriptions made by each provider within a desired timeframe.
The Rx Report, when printed and manually signed by the prescribing provider every 24 to 72 hours*, satisfies positive identification requirements. Every minute of every day must be accounted for, including weekends and holidays. Positive identification documentation must be kept for three years and provided in the case of an audit.
*The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy highly recommends Rx Report documentation every 24 hours.
