# Lab Orders & Results - Performing In-House Lab Testing

> How to order, bill for, and document results for lab tests your practice performs in-house. (e.g. CLIA-Waived services)

## Setup

Before you can order in-house tests, create a Lab Vendor for your own practice:

    Click on your email address in the upper right-hand corner of Elation, then go to **Settings** → **Labs**.

  <Step title="Add a Lab Vendor for your practice">
    Click **+ Add Lab Vendor** and create a Lab Vendor using your practice's name.

## Entering the order

    Open the [Lab Order Form](/articles/Regular-Lab-Order-Form) and select your practice as the **Lab Vendor**.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Under the **Any Site** dropdown, select **In-house draw**.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Complete the remainder of the order.

    * If a test you perform isn't listed, click **Create a new test with this name...** to add it to your test database.

    <Tip>
      Double-check spelling and naming before creating a new test—tests cannot be edited after creation.
    </Tip>

## Entering the charge

The Lab Order Form does not support billing. Enter the CPT codes and charges separately in the billing section of the associated visit note.

To speed this up, you can either:

* Store the codes in [Popular CPT Codes settings](/articles/billing-settings---service-locations--procedure-codes#how-to-manage-popular-cpt-procedure-codes) for quick selection on each visit.
* Add the codes to a [Visit Note Template](/articles/elation-visit-note-templates#create-a-custom-visit-note-template) so they're applied in bulk whenever the template is used.

## Entering results in a visit note

    If the test you performed is available in the [Point-of-Care Labs form](/articles/point-of-care-labs), enter the results there and export them to the visit note.

  <Step title="If the test isn't in the Point-of-Care Labs form, choose how to document it:">
    * **To record structured, trendable values:** Upload a blank PDF, file it as a **Lab Report**, and use the [**+ Lab Values**](/articles/record-structured-data-from-in-house-or-faxed-lab-reports) feature to store the results in the chart.
    * **To record results that don't need to be structured or trended:** Type the test name and result directly into the **Data** section (or another section of your choice) of the visit note.
