# Adding a Medicare Type Code

> Learn how to add a Medicare Type Code when Medicare is the secondary policy

This article explains how to add a Medicare Type Code when Medicare is the patient's secondary insurance policy.

## Overview

### What is a Medicare Type Code?

A Medicare Type Code is a designation required when Medicare is the patient's secondary insurance policy. This code indicates why Medicare is secondary to another payer.

### Why is a Medicare Type Code important?

When submitting claims where Medicare is the secondary payer, the Medicare Type Code must be included for proper claim processing. Without this code, claims may be rejected or denied.

## Workflow Instructions

### Adding a Medicare Type Code

For Elation EHR + Billing practices, while baseline insurance information is entered via the EHR, the Medicare Type Code currently needs to be entered via Elation Billing.

2. **Access Additional Options** - Select **See More** to expand the additional fields.

3. **Select Medicare Secondary Code** - Select the appropriate Medicare Secondary Code from the drop-down menu.

4. **Save** - Click **Save** to apply the changes.
