# AI Billing Guide - Generating billing codes automatically in the EHR

## Overview

### What is AI Coding?

When triggered, AI Coding automatically adds the following types of codes to the Billing Section of your visit note based on the information listed:

* **CPT Codes** - Evaluation & Management CPT codes are auto-populated based information included in the patient’s chart.
* **Diagnosis Codes** - Suggests and populates supporting ICD‑10 diagnosis codes per CPT line based on the visit note snapshot and the patient’s problem list.
* **NDC Codes** - Identifies drug codes and auto-populates NDC code, dosage, measure, and units using the patient’s chart and historical claims.

AI Coding will not overwrite any existing codes that are in the bill.

### What are the benefits of AI Coding?

AI Coding expedites coding and improves coding accuracy and completeness.

## Setup

AI Coding must be enabled by an Admin Level User by following these steps:

| **1** | Click **Settings** -> **Billing** .                                                          |
| ----- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **2** | Go to the **AI Billing** section and set the **Billing Analysis** toggle to **green (ON)** . |

## Workflow Instructions

### Using AI Coding

To use AI Coding:

| **1** | Ensure your visit note documentation is complete.                                                                                                                                                                                 |
| ----- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **2** | Open the **Billing Section** of the visit note. Either click **+ Add Billing Information** or **Edit Bill**.                                                                                                                      |
| **3** | Click **Generate Codes** or **Apply Codes**. If a medication or injection CPT code is applied, AI Coding will look for NDC information in historical claims with the same CPT code and include the NDC information with the bill. |
| **4** | Review all codes added by AI Coding for accuracy. Click the information (i) icon next to the added codes to review the clinical supporting evidence.                                                                              |
| **5** | Click **Save & Close** to save the bill.                                                                                                                                                                                          |

### Reverting automatically generated codes

To revert the bill to what it was before using AI Coding, click the **Revert to previous bill** button at the top of the codes section.

### Providing feedback about the automatically generated codes

Click one of the feedback buttons to provide Elation feedback about AI Coding. This will assist Elation with improving on the tool.

### Providing feedback on AI Coding sources

Review the clinical supporting evidence behind added codes by clicking the information (i) icon next to a code. Click the thumbs up or down icons to provide feedback on the recommendation, AI reasoning summary, or supporting documentation. Elation will use this feedback to improve AI Coding recommendations and evidence display.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why can’t I see the Generate Codes or Apply Codes button on the bill?

You must enable Billing Analysis Settings in order for the **Generate Codes**/**Apply Codes** button to appear. Follow the [Setup](#setup) instructions above to enable the Setting.

### Can anyone click the Generate Codes or Apply Codes button?

Yes, both Provider Level Users and Staff Level Users can click the **Generate Codes**/**Apply Codes** button.

### Can I click the Generate Codes or Apply Codes button multiple times?

Yes, you can click the **Generate Codes**/**Apply Codes** button multiple times.
